We've added all the details of nursery and preschools in Danderyd here and we'll be collecting reviews over the next few months to help parents make their childcare choices. International preschools such as Imagination International are included alongside local commune preschools like Kornvägen Förskola and Montessori schools such as Trappgränds Förskola. Please do get in touch if you have a comment or review to add!
Some of us are here, some of us are away. I love Danderyd at this time of year because there is so little traffic and all the wonderful gardens have come to life. A few people have asked me which of our local restaurants and cafes are open through the summer. In order to answer properly, we did some research and came up with this fab list of what is open and who is on a well-deserved break! Please let us know if we've missed anywhere.
While hoping for good weather (crossing fingers, holding thumbs!), here is what is going on in Danderyd on Friday 19th June 2015. - Djursholm Slott's park 4.45pm - 6.30pm. The midsummer pole will be raised at 4.45 then plenty of dancing will follow.
Where will you see in the spring in Danderyd on Thursday 30th April 2015? There are four bonfires planned here in Danderyd this year: 7pm at Kvarnparken8pm Danderyds sångensemble will sing. 8.15 Spring speech. 8.30 Boys and girls from DSK will light the fire and there will be mudic from the blåsorkester. 9.30 fireworks. Coffee, hotdogs, sweets and a lottery. 7.30pm at GermaniaparkenMusic from Danderyds blåsorkester, tourch lights by Djursholms Scouts, spring speeches, singing and the bonfire. 8.30pm at SvanholmsparkenBonfire, singing and speeches. 9pm at Djursholms-EkebyBonfire and fireworks in the meadow alongside Kolgavägen.
Here are some things I didn't know: * You can wander in at any time during the day and get a drink. The Pauli bar is open all day, there are seats in the lounge and on the terrace, which has a rather nice view out over the sea (and samsöviken, the marina area to the left).
* There is no entrance fee for the Velvet nightclub evenings. Felix says that is because it should feel like going to someone's home. The idea really appeals to me, as it means stopping by and having a drink and a bit of a dance for an hour or so is absolutely ok. The days of staying out all night are long behind me...
For my family, it will soon be time to start spending family time inside (though not when it is so beautifully sunny again!) and that means we'll be testing out the strength of the banisters, counting the stairs, putting the entertainment through its paces, eating, eating and eating and anything else a 4-year-old can do in an afternoon out at Villa Pauli! For activities on, check out Villa Pauli's website or watch out for them on Life in Danderyd's Facebook page. Yolo was all abuzz with guests at the opening night in August. Drinks were flowing from the table set up outside and we ran into some folks that made the evening a whole lot more interesting, including members of the British International School of Stockholm's parent/teacher association and Lidewij in ’t Veld, Furniture Designer for MOMIQ who designed one of the beautiful chairs in Yolo. After catching up on some local news, we made it inside to try and get a taste of the food and get some pictures. We were greeted by an incredibly friendly staff member who made sure we knew where the drink table was and served me a delicious chanterelle toast sprinkled with västerbotten cheese that just melted in my mouth, it was so amazing. Life in Danderyd then met up with Sarah Korduner Izosimov the following week to find out more about the concept and get a feel of how they are doing now that they have been open for a couple of weeks. Sarah, as a local who grew up in Danderyd, felt the need to do something new, live her dream and have no regrets and thus, YOLO (You Only Live Once) was born. She not only wants to live life to the fullest but give back to the community in which she comes from and currently lives in, which is one big reason she decided that Djursholm would be a great place for a new restaurant.
I must admit that I had my doubts that a newly opened bistro would be able to have wonderful food and stellar service but Yolo has met and exceeded my expectations. The staff was very lovely and helpful. They were there when we needed them but never intrusive and never made us feel that we were taking too long as we lingered over interesting conversation. Chef Jonas Lundgren even came to my table to answer my question about the fish, which felt very personal. The bistro itself gives the feeling that you are sitting in someone’s home, surrounded by warm tones and lovely photographs and cozy furniture.
When I asked Sarah what new surprises will we see in the future, she told me that Yolo plans on offering catering in addition to the take-out option they currently offer, a rent-a–chef option and even in-home wine tastings with the bistro’s Sommelier, Annika Gelhaar. We'll report back if we get a chance to experience that first hand! Yolo, a new restaurant will be opening it’s doors this Saturday, August 16th and is located at Vendevägen 14 in Djursholm. This casual restaurant that is meant be a social atmosphere where the guests can see what is going on in the kitchen and seats 40 guests, 8 of those seats at the bar. There are also 20 seats available outside. The kitchen will be open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday and for brunch on Sundays. An entré at Yolo will cost between 175-275 kronor.
Behind the concept of Yolo is the owner, Sarah Korduner Izosimov and award-winning chef and creative leader, Jonas Lundgren. They will be offering dishes with Swedish ingredients with an open mind for international tastes. More to come once we at Life in Danderyd see and taste a bit more at Friday’s premiere. More information can be found here. Crossing fingers and holding thumbs that it doesn't rain on Friday! Here are the events around Danderyd where you can celebrate midsummer this year: Kvarnparken Thursday 19 June at 6pm - help decorate the midsommar pole. Ice cream provided for children! Our local Brownie group, 1st Djursholm Brownies, is the only Brownie group in Sweden and they celebrated their 10 year anniversary last week with a big party. Brownies are a group of girl scouts and the girls work towards all sorts of goals, such as 'taking care of a neighbour' and 'raising money for charity' and, when they achieve a goal, they get a fabric badge that they can wear to each meeting. Brownies have operated in the UK for 100 years this year and to celebrate with 1st Djursholm Brownies, a very special guest arrived from Britain - Lesley Knighton MBE, the Commissioner for British Guides in Foreign Countries. Here are some photos from the celebrations! |
